The vast richness of Celtic Art is unsurpassed in intricacy of design and beauty. The key patterns requiring great mathematical and geometrical skills as well as artistic ones, with only basic pens and eyesight to draw lines beyond beyond modern skill (158 interlacing lines of white lines edged in black on a background in one quarter inch of one section.) Examples of this great Art can be seen in the magnificant book of Kells and the Book of Durrow. This pendent reflects one of the designs, known as the trinity knot. This unique design is brought to life by the ancient art of enamelling, for which Ireland has been famous since earliest times. For more than half a century the dedicated craftspeople of Tara Jewellery have given great pride in continuing this traditional art to create original and beautiful pieces of quality Irish jewellery. Once a design has been impressed into the base metal, vibrantly coloured grains of enamel ae stripped by hand onto the pieces to bring the full spectrum to this unique craft style. The completed pieces are then fired, by hand, under intense flame in order to melt the coloured sand grains into glass. The colour of the enamel brightens during this firing process to a great degree, thus illuminating the artwork. Following several other finishing and polishing operations the piece is finally plated in 18 carat gold. In all it takes over 20 seperate stages of handcrafting to produce just one unique item of jewellery.
