The Celtic Cross belongs to a period of the middle ages, approximately 8th to 10th century. These crosses had a religious significance. Death and the Afterlife being extremely important to the ancient Irish Celts. The original crosses handcut in stone showing intricate interlacing knots, Mythical animals and Human figures. The cross in this pendent reflects a simple celtic design. These unique designs are brought to life by the ancient art of enamelling, for which Ireland has been famous since earliest times. For more than half a century the dedicated craftspeople of Tara Jewellery have given great pride in continuing this traditional art to create original and beautiful pieces of quality Irish jewellery. Once a design has been impressed into the base metal, vibrantly coloured grains of enamel ae stripped by hand onto the pieces to bring the full spectrum to this unique craft style. The completed pieces are then fired, by hand, under intense flame in order to melt the coloured sand grains into glass. The colour of the enamel brightens during this firing process to a great degree, thus illuminating the artwork. Following several other finishing and polishing operations the piece is finally plated in 18 carat gold. In all it takes over 20 seperate stages of handcrafting to produce just one unique item of jewellery.
